SAMMM - Women’s Empowerment Program

Women from the SAMMM project make organic kumkum from locally grown, ground turmeric. When turmeric and fresh lemon juice are mixed together, and this mixture is then left in the sun, it turns a carmine red; the result of a chemical reaction. This red mix is essentially pure organic kumkum. Once thoroughly sun-baked and dried, it is packed.

SAMMM –

Sakthi Amma Women’s Empowerment Program

(Sakthi Amma Magalir Mempattu Maiyyam) empowers women in difficult family circumstances with the opportunity of stable employment. Most of the women in this program are the sole breadwinners in their families. The initiative started with six women in 2007 and now employs over 50 women. They learn to make organic pooja products and sew traditional Indian clothing. The program supports women by inspiring dedication and confidence, thus fostering their self-esteem.
