Welcome to our goal of reforestation and afforestation indigenous trees in Tamil Nadu, South India, over the next 20 years. At the core of our endeavor is a commitment to forest regeneration, sustainable agriculture, social empowerment, and environmental harmony. Through multi-tree cropping, we support local farmers, enabling them to cultivate diverse crops while preserving the indigenous flora. Our efforts extend to waste management, ensuring that our surroundings remain clean and pristine.

Additionally, we take pride in our landscaping maintenance, enhancing the natural beauty of our communities while fostering an eco-friendly environment. But our impact doesn't stop there. We aim to create a sustainable ecosystem that benefits local communities by growing food and nurturing their well-being.

Together, we envision a greener, healthier future for Tamil Nadu, where nature thrives, communities prosper, and the environment is safeguarded. Join us in this transformative journey as we plant the seeds of change, cultivate harmony, and grow a brighter tomorrow. Your support means the world to us, and together, we can make a lasting difference for generations to come.

The Sri Sakthi Amma Forest: A Sacred Haven for Sandalwood & Fruit Trees

Sandalwood is a very sacred tree, and it is becoming an endangered species due to its very valuable wood (the main cause being theft).

We are creating a sacred forest with mixed fruit trees (mango, jackfruit, sapota, guava, custard apple, sweet lime, jamun, etc.) with sandalwood. We will create a secure area for the trees to protect the forest.

Join us in creating this very special forest!

Help Us Realize Sri Sakthi Amma’s Sacred Forest!

“When we understand and love nature, we also start to love ourselves.”

— Sri Sakthi Amma

earth day_web.jpg

Sri Sakthi Amma is the founder of Sri Narayani Peedam and Green Sakthi was borne out of Sakthi Amma’s great love for nature. In Vedic culture, Nature is the Divine and the Divine is Nature. It is Nature that provides sustenance for all beings in the form of medicine, shelter, food, and clothing. By caring for Nature, we are caring for all beings on this planet.

Green Sakthi reflects a holistic approach to preserving and loving Nature and a concerted effort to counteract global warming by initiating massive tree-planting projects. Waste management, recycling, supplying clean drinking water to villages and schools, environmental education among local school children are all part of Green Sakthi.

Nature provides all beings sustenance, medicine, shelter, and clothing. Our programs reflect a concerted effort to develop more love for our earth and counteract global warming.

Green Sakthi is a non-profit environmental program that grows and plants trees, manages 2 tons of waste each day with its Zero-Waste Management Program and educates local school kids in all things about Mother Earth. Based in rural South India and founded by living saint Sri Sakthi Amma, Green Sakthi is a collective committed to deepening the relationship between people and nature.

We want to inspire children and adults around the world to connect and care for nature through environmental education and hands-on experience with the earth.

Our initiatives include massive tree-planting projects, growing saplings from seed, donating trees locally, zero waste management, recycling, creating the richest compost we know of, as well as environmental education for children, our future.

What is Green Sakthi?

Green Sakthi is Afforestation!

In 2000, Green Sakthi's first large-scale partnership program began – a mass afforestation project in the sacred Kailash Giri Hills behind Sri Narayani Peedam.

Together with the Tamil Nadu State Forestry Department, 100 000 indigenous trees were planted annually, reaching 700 000 trees over a period of seven years.

All the saplings were raised from seeds in the Green Sakthi Tree Nursery.

Every year, we donate up to 100 000 trees to private and public institutions, including schools, universities, police departments, and government hospitals.

We have donated over 1 million native trees locally, grown in our tree nursery, including 600 000 trees to 300 villages.

Green Sakthi is Solar Energy!

The power of the sun will power enough meals to feed 5000 visitors for no cost every day. We will keep you posted on how the surplus sun-power will be used.

What is Green Sakthi? Green Sakthi is recycling: EXNORA. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

EXNORA Zero Waste Management Programme was established in 1997, in conjunction with the environmental organization from Chennai of the same name. The project uses the ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ principle, with each item segregated by hand, and all biodegradable waste turned into compost. Paper, glass, and cardboard are recycled, plastic bags are washed, dried, and sold for recycling.

Today, EXNORA (EXcellent NOvel and RAdical ideas) is a completely self-sustaining unit; collecting more than two tonnes of waste a day and employing nearly two hundred local workers including those with disabilities (this means that rather than being a burden to their family, they can contribute to the family’s economy).

This program requires no electricity and serves as a model for other rural communities all over the world to adopt.

Every day 2 tonnes of waste is collected and each item is sorted by hand by our team.

Green Sakthi is Vermi Composting!

All biodegradable including banana leaves (we serve meals on), food waste from the dining areas, ingredients leftover from temple poojas, flower garlands, cow dung, and urine (direct from our cow shed — the mixture of dung and uring neutralizes the odor) are collected, and slowly breaks down under the hot sun for three months.

The second phase is moved into the vermicomposting shed, where worms bred on-site, break down the compost even further for another three months. Finally, the compost is sifted and packed into bags. This compost, known as ‘black gold’, is sold at the temple and used in the campus gardens, afforestation areas, and tree nursery.

After 3 months under the hot sun, the biodegradable mulch is moved into the shed to be broken down by worms over the next 3 months.

What is Green Sakthi?

Green Sakthi is Sacred Groves!

Our first Sacred Grove is 16 acres surrounding Sri Narayani Holistic Centre, a place for wellness and healing solely dedicated to Siddha Medicine (India’s oldest medical system).

This Sacred Grove includes indigenous trees of South India, each tree holding medicinal properties in its leaves, bark, wood, or root system. At present, we are creating medicinal, aromatic, and silent gardens within this Sacred Grove. These gardens will be multi-purposed areas: places of learning about the plants, for rest, meditation, and well-being.

“Each of us can at least plant and

grow three or five trees.

If you live in an apartment, grow plants on the balcony or by the window.

When everyone grows plants and trees, they will cool the clouds and bring rain.”

— Sri Sakthi Amma

“All trees and plants were considered to be Divine: the banyan tree was a form of God… the bodhi tree was another form of God… the bamboo clump and the neem trees were also each… a form of God.

When all these trees were considered to be Divine, then the people were afraid to cut them down and they protected the trees with devotion. When these trees were protected, society also enjoyed many indirect health benefits.”

— Sri Sakthi Amma
